No Floorhug in Knockdown#125

As a certified floorhug hater, I’ve observed that I dislike the mechanic, not for the reversaling aspect and what it does to neutral, but for how often advantage states get killed by it. The coolest moments in the game (for me) are long, unique comboes, which often (/usually) happen when people miss a floorhug and the opponent is ready to capitalize on it. Usually what happens, though, is the opponent gets hit, floorhugs and gets knocked down, gets hit again, floorhugs again, and the attacker is now in lag and must tech chase (often at frame disadvantage). It still feels like there is very little reason not to hold down in most situations.

One possible solution to this could be that, once you floorhug and fail an Amsah tech and are sent into knockdown, you are unable to floorhug until after you have started a tech option. This preserves the strengths of floorhugs in neutral (and putting the same mental stack on your opening follow up) while opening up more combo routes by calling out missed floorhugs, which punishes players for mindlessly holding down and missing techs. Given the state of the game, I think the playerbase has come around to the mechanic, yet the mechanic’s ubiquity is still something that could be addressed.
