This is perhaps one of the most skewed mechanics in the entire game, and leads to incredible frustration when trying to take stocks. The mechanic itself isn’t exaclty an issue, but the fact that it works for so long means that there are a handful of characters where if they get near the wall, they can recover no matter what you do, and often reversal you for trying. This is especially true for characters who have bursty side specials that refresh every time they get hit, meaning gimping is pretty well only to get extra damage if anything, and even doing that is risky because of the potential for reversals.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to try to spot check these recoveries by doing something like disabling repeated side special uses or making those side specials worse, but I think something should really be done to at least make it so wall techs don’t become a get out of jail free card forever (especially since they’re so easy–just recover, hold toward the ledge, and press shield if the other guy comes anywhere close). My suggestion for this is to impose an upper limit on either knockback, percent, or both for when wall teching is just not possible anymore. This wouldn’t apply to the variation of wall techs where you’re in knockback for at least a frame and then tech, only the one where you tech out of hitpause by buffering the input before getting hit.
This change would allow players to guard more without gutting anyone’s recovery, and could potentially even allow for giving characters better burst recovery options without contending against this universal option making them broken. For a threshold… 130%? If we’re going with damage, that feels like about the number where you should start being able to net a kill for clipping someone’s recovery if they don’t sweetspot the ledge, or dropping from ledge and hitting them with a strong attack. Knockback I’m not sure, but nailing someone with a dstrong or fstrong right at the ledge at way past kill percent and then just having them just bounce off and usually reversal you is ridiculous.
